Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay's birth took place on August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay discovered her love for the arts from her grandmother Denise. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, allowed her to pursue art literature and the theater in the daylight. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt introduced her to DuVernay. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's example that art can be an activist vehicle. DuVernay was taught to be socially mindful by her mother. DuVernay, who grew up with her family in Compton was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. Her father was a witness to the historic march of Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was located in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay toured Selma in the summers and was later motivated to make a documentary on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she was awarded qualifications in English and African American Studies. DuVernay started broadcasting journalism when she was just a young student. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was tasked to look-out and search for the house of an individual Jury member. After being disappointed in journalistic work by the assignments she was handed and deciding to go after the field of publicity. DuVernay was hired right from college to be a junior publicist at the studio that was small. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999.
